ABSTRACT:
Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata Linn.), a medicinally important plant belonging to the family Fabaceae, has been extensively utilized in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and folk medicine for the management of numerous disorders. The flowers and leaves of Bauhinia variegata are rich sources of flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, glycosides, terpenoids, alkaloids, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers, thereby contributing to their nutraceutical and therapeutic value. Scientific investigations have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anticancer, wound healing, gastroprotective, and immunomodulatory activities associated with these plant parts. In addition to medicinal applications, Kachnar flowers are consumed as vegetables and functional foods in several regions of India, highlighting their nutritional significance. The present review comprehensively summarizes the botanical profile, phytochemistry, nutritional composition, pharmacological activities, traditional uses, mechanisms of action, safety aspects, and future prospects of Kachnar flowers and leaves. Emphasis is also placed on the emerging role of Kachnar in nutraceutical formulations, herbal products, and evidence-based therapeutic development.
