ABSTRACT:
Terminalia arjuna (Roxb.) Wight and Arn., commonly known as Arjuna, is a prominent medicinal tree belonging to the family Combretaceae and has been extensively utilized in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of the botanical characteristics, phytochemical composition, ethnomedicinal applications, and pharmacological properties of T. arjuna. Various parts of the plant, particularly the bark, contain a rich diversity of bioactive constituents, including triterpenoids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, and essential minerals, which contribute to its therapeutic potential. Numerous experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated its cardioprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antihyperlipidemic, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, antiviral, wound-healing, and anticancer activities. The cardioprotective effects of T. arjuna have received significant scientific attention due to its ability to improve cardiac function, regulate blood pressure, reduce oxidative stress, and protect against myocardial damage. Furthermore, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties play a crucial role in mitigating chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress. Traditional ethnomedicinal uses of T. arjuna for the management of cardiovascular disorders, skin diseases, fractures, asthma, and metabolic disorders are increasingly supported by modern pharmacological evidence. Despite its extensive therapeutic applications, further investigations are required to elucidate precise molecular mechanisms, establish standardized formulations, and conduct large-scale clinical trials to validate its efficacy and safety. Overall, Terminalia arjuna represents a valuable natural source of bioactive compounds with significant potential for the development of novel therapeutic agents and evidence-based phytopharmaceutical products
